How To Change Engine Oil For Honda Vehicles

Numerous individuals depend on their automotive technician to change the oil in their vehicle. Some people, however, like to do it themselves. If you'd like to change the oil on your Honda, before you start, make sure you have all the tools you need and the know-how. In many cases, this is better left to the professionals.

If you are sure, however, that you're ready to find out how to change engine oil for Honda vehicles, we're going to offer some assistance. Please keep in mind that not all models are exactly the same, so the steps you need to take for an oil change may differ slightly from vehicle to vehicle. But not much. If you are in doubt, or would like to have a video tutorial, they are available online.

Oil Changes – How Often?

Typically, oil changes are generally recommended between 5000 and 7500 miles. This can differ depending on driving habits, the climate in which you operate your vehicle, and more. Check your owner's manual to be sure.

Remember that when you change the oil, you should also change the oil filter.

Types of Oil

Genuine Honda Motor Oil is, of course, recommended by Honda. An ultimate full synthetic blend or premium grade conventional motor oil may be used if you can't find motor oil by Honda. It must, however, contain the viscosity grade specified for use in your car. Check your owner's manual to see what is indicated.

Changing the Oil

Remember: Change the filter any time you change your oil! Otherwise, contaminants from the filter will immediately contaminate your new oil.

  • On a service station hydraulic lift, or up on ramps, raise your vehicle.
  • Until it reaches standard operating temperature, run the engine and then shut it off.
  • Take off the engine oil fill cap after opening the hood.
  • From the bottom of the engine, remove the oil drain bolt and washer.
  • Into a container that’s appropriate for your purposes, drain the oil.
  • To let the remaining oil drain, remove the filter (you'll need a special wrench).
  • Be sure the engine block is completely cleared of the old gasket. Sometimes they stick.
  • According to instructions, install the new filter. Using a new drain bolt washer, replace the drain bolt and washer.
  • With the recommended oil, refill the engine (you’ll use roughly 4 1/2 US quarts).
  • The oil fill cap can now be replaced.
  • Run the engine and check for leaks around the filter and drain bolt.
  • For several minutes, let the engine sit after shutting it off. Check the dipstick oil level to make sure it's appropriate. Add more oil if needed.
