How To Change Batteries For Honda Car Keys

Is the remote control on your Honda key ring experiencing operating fluctuations? Maybe it has stopped working entirely. Regardless, it's likely time for a new battery. Sadly, people walk around with useless remotes because they're afraid – or simply don't know how – to change the battery in the keyless locking and unlocking remote. Don't inconvenience yourself anymore!

Here, we are going to go through a very general list of steps to take in order to change batteries for Honda car keys. Keep in mind that some models may vary where the steps are concerned. If you find the following instructions don't apply to your particular remote, you should be able to locate an instructional video online that will be of more or further assistance. (You can always stop by Empire of Honda Manhasset and request assistance with your car key remote.)

Batteries – What Kind?

For the most part, key fobs for Hondas use a circular, flat 3V battery. In the Manhasset area – and pretty much anywhere else – these are usually available at hardware stores, some drugstores, electronics stores, etc. Your local Honda dealership likely has these batteries in stock, as well.

Changing the Battery

(These instructions are specifically for a Honda Civic, but other instructions are available via the Internet.)

The entire point here is to get your key fob open, take the battery out, replace it, and then reassemble your key fob:

  • The button for the metal key release should be located, pressed, and slid. The key can then be slid out.
  • With a small flat head screwdriver or the key, the key fob must be pried open.
  • Right above the battery, press your thumb down to keep the key fob together (otherwise the external buttons and contents may fall out).
  • The dead battery can now be removed. Make sure you pay attention to where the negative and positive side is so when you're putting the new battery in, you will do so correctly. On the new battery, try not to touch the terminals. Corrosion can be caused (eventually) by the oil on your skin. That takes the life of your battery and significantly shortens it.
  • In the same position as the dead battery, you can now insert the new battery. As a guide, use the negative and positive marks on the key fob's interior.
  • Next, the two halves of the key fob can be aligned and, to snap them back together, gently apply pressure.

You did it!
